You may have a great looking website, but is it producing leads for your business? Are your following Google’s Best Practices? Is your content lined up with your target audience? Small business owners need to be educated in basic SEO and here are a few things to keep Google happy and drive traffic to your site:

1. Not Researching Your Keywords

Keywords are the backbone of any digital marketing campaign. Taking the time to research your keywords will be set you apart from your competitors and get your marketing strategy dialed-in.

Not only should you use keywords throughout your website content, but also use them on all of your active social media profiles. Keywords allow Google to crawl your content to get a better understanding of what each page is about.

Getting started is simple. Use the Google Keyword Planner Tool in Google Adwords to help you jumpstart your keyword research.

2. Ignoring your Title Tags

Why do title tags matter for SEO? Your title tags allow both your visitors and search engines to preview your site before clicking on it from the search engine result page (SERP).

Be as concise as possible and stick to 55 characters or less. If you can add a keyword in the title tag, do so, but make sure it naturally fits with the rest of your content.

3. Duplicate Content

Google loves unique content. On the flip side, it hates duplicate content. Some of this may be out of your control. Having your content copied can happen, so be sure to run your pages through anti plagiarism tools such as Copyscape.com or PlagSpotter.com to run your site through a scan.
